Vancouver in One Post

Welcome home husband though ever so drunk

I'm glad "blogging regularly" wasn't one of my resolutions, because I would be failing that one miserably. Someday, I may get back to blogging more regularly (or at least frequently)--someday. I hope, anyway! I haven't finished my HK posts yet (oh, didn't this happen last time too? Yes, I think it did.) but lest I get too far behind, I'm just gonna go ahead and talk about Vancouver before too much more time passes. I just went for a short trip this time, mostly because I wanted to be there for Py's birthday. And I arrived to glorious sun and warmth! Woohoo, sun and warmth! So we made a beeline for the UBC Botanical Garden; above is my favorite explanatory sign from their Physic Garden. Welcome home husband, though ever so drunk! At least he'll also be free from corns!
benny

Although before we got there, we stopped and had brunch at a place in Kitsilano, whose name I can no longer remember. Um, it was a pub, though? This is Py's southwest eggs benedict....

Cod & Chips

And my fish and chips. This was merely okay, with the batter being a bit too heavy and greasy. What I WAS tickled by was the paper lining the plate--it was one of those wax sheets that's printed to look like newspaper, except this one had all kinds of weird fish recipes, including one for Cheesy Pollock Loaf, which I really regret not taking a photo of. It involved lots of mayo and pollock mixed together and stuffed into a hollowed out bread loaf.

Flowering chives

This picture doesn't do a good job of showing it, but that bee in the middle of this picture was ENORMOUS. Even its legs were at least twice the width of normal bees. Not sure if this was a different species or if the obesity epidemic has reached the bee world.

Visitor

And this cute and normal-sized ladybug paid Py's finger a brief visit.

On another day, we went to Stanley Park and saw this gang of goslings. I had to laugh, because everyone who walked by stopped to take a picture. We've become such a picture-taking culture! I was all for having a seat in the grass and hanging out and watching them some more, but it turns out that where there are geese, there is a lot of goose poop. So we kept going.

Cass Mccombs
We also saw two awesome shows--Santigold, who was awesome and had an incredible team of dancers, and the decidedly more downtempo and relaxed Cass Mccombs. Sorry, that's as good a picture as I can summon up of Cass McCombs--it was in a small, very dark venue. But it was awesome (and so was the Santigold show). I can't knock Vancouver's music scene!

wings

As usual, we did a lot of good eating! And as usual, i did not take nearly as many pictures as I should have. I'm really starting to consider whether I should get a smaller camera so that I don't lug the dSLR around all the time....because then I could have shown you the enormous mango shaved ice (enormous and delicious) that we had one day at lunch at a Taiwanese beef noodle soup place. Instead, you just get a picture of these (also delicious) chicken wings from Peckinpah in Gastown. This was followed by very credible barbecue.

Calamansi

To celebrate Py's birthday, we made dinner reservations at Yew Restaurant, in the Four Seasons Hotel downtown. Another occasion where I really regretted not bringing the camera (Py seemed pleasantly surprised, heh) because we had some really great food there, and the restaurant just had a really great ambiance. (I was less pleased with the seating, which was kind of saggy, so I was practically at chin level with the table.) We started with a shared raw platter, which had some of the best oysters I've had in ages, and then I had bouillabaisse. Mmm, soupy seafood deliciousness. Oh--I must give a special shoutout to the biscuits we were served. Those biscuits were awesome. I would not be surprised if they involved lard. So you might be asking, "Well if you went to this fancy pants restaurant and didn't bring your camera, what gives with the bowl of fruit?"
Calamansi Pie, sliced

We were too full for dessert at Yew, so I made birthday pie at home! Those limes are actually calamansis, which, in case you can't tell from the bowl, are tiny. And my recipe called for 1/2 a cup of juice. Let me tell you, it takes a lot of these tiny bastards to make 1/2 a cup of juice. But it was worth it--calamansis have a sharp tartness that's different from limes (almost orangey, which makes sense because they are actually related to oranges). And the crust! Can't go wrong with digestive biscuits and butter, that's what I say.

Otter shooting lasers out of his nose

And how did we belatedly celebrate my birthday? Of course--trip to the aquarium! Yay! Check it out, this otter is totally shooting lasers out of his nose. Okay, I've rambled on enough--I will stop now. But there are more aquarium and flower pictures in my Vancouver set over on Flickr, if you are so inclined!

Like a flash...

Cake

That's how fast this post is going to be.  Where have I been?  Well, work mostly.  That, and recovering from bronchitis.  THAT'S RIGHT!  Who gets freaking bronchitis in May?  Well apparently a lot of people--the waiting room at the doctor's office was full of people with similarly impressive coughs.  We could have formed a musical super-group.  In fact, I think we inadvertently did a couple of verses from the Carmina Burana (and just think, all this is before I got the codeine cough syrup).

But anyhow, I am chilling at home right now, having just performed my fastest packing job ever.  I'm off in a bit to beautiful sunny Vancouver (true story!  They have better weather for a change, than we do here in NYC right now.)  We will be celebrating Py's birthday, and belatedly celebrating mine.  Yes, it's true...I am another year older.  Not really another year more mature though...

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Not a whole lot of difference between the before and after, except maybe the size of my head and the cake.

Sort of ombre

Well, on that note, allow me to leave you with a parting shot of the inside of my tiny cake.  Oh yeah, that's a whole lotta pink.  Yay for pink!  I can't wait to get to Vancouver, spot prawn season is (I think) still going...mmm....prawny goodness for me sooooon....

Happy Memorial Day, everyone!  Don't forget to go to the 5 Boro Picnyc (Saturday is sold out but Sunday still has tickets available) and report back on how it was! (Oh, one more thing! My new favorite blog! Go check out Boots in the Oven--I have been reading back through the archives, and it is SO MUCH FUN TO READ. And is giving me all kinds of travel ideas...)

Upcoming Event: 5 Boro Picnyc

Upset that you didn't get tickets to GoogaMooga either?  Don't be!  Because next week is the 5 Boro Picnyc (cute, huh), and you, yes YOU, wonderful blog readers, can get a discount on tickets, thanks to Jarlsberg Cheese, one of the sponsors!  Just enter the code "JCheese" for a discount on the general admission tickets; but act fast, because there are only a limited number of those available.

I should also point out though, that at $25, the tickets are totally reasonable!  And who doesn't like taking the ferry to Governor's Island?  Plus, there's a grilled cheese cookoff, and if the grilled cheese sandwiches we got to sample at the press preview are any indication, then it's going to be one heck of a cookoff.  Oh, and beer.  Mmm, beer.  And lots of tasty food to sample.  Mmm, food.  And by the way, you'll also be giving back--a portion of ticket sales will benefit this year’s community/charitable partners: Slow Food NYC, Earth Matter, Kingsborough Community College’s Culinary Program and Teen Battle Chef.

Anyway, go check out their website, go buy a ticket, and go have a great time!  And thank you to Jarlsberg and Jimmy's No. 43 for hosting us :D

Last Saturday...

DSC_0267

Last Saturday morning, I woke up at 6 a.m. with the specter of eyeless bunnies passing before my eyes.  How terrifying!!

The bunny army is coming for you

An hour later, all bunnies had been eyed; but I was now feeling like I was being judged, for some weird reason...

Ready to go

Even when they were packed (in pairs, so they wouldn't get lonely), I could feel them staring!!

DSC_0270

So, into boxes they went, and then I went to the Brooklyn Flea where I found a whole bunch of foodbloggers busy putting together a display of some really awesome looking treats!

IMAG0443

I mean, seriously, look at this!  Everything looked so professional and beautiful (even if this photo is totally subpar).

IMAG0444

Oh hi, bunnies!  I think they all went to good homes (and by homes, I mean tummies); I hope so anyway!  I bought a whole bunch of goodies from the other bakers, but because I stink, I didn't get a good picture of any of my loot because after this I went straight to a friend's birthday party, where all the yummies got inhaled.  (Although I managed to rescue and take the brown sugar pies from Prospect Pies home).

Air Plant

Also!  While I was browsing the Flea (which is great; I used to live two blocks from it, so naturally it only started up after I moved...) I came across the RootsinRust stand and couldn't resist taking this home.  It's a spindle from an old oven (used to control the temperature, according to the nice chap running the stand) and it's now being used as a "planter" for an air plant.  I've been assured that air plants are really hard to kill, so I think this will be perfect; and I just loved the idea that this piece came from an old oven.  It seemed fitting :)

Oh, and the bake sale results?  Over $3400 for Share Our Strength.  I'd say that's a success :)

There's a roundup of other posts and more information on the bake sale and Share Our Strength here.  Go check it out and donate if you can!  And if you missed it this time, you can sign up for future bake sales and fundraisers.

So what's on tap for this Saturday?  I guess I'll find out shortly!

*This post brought to you by my absolute lack of coffee this morning.  Argh.

Happy Easter!

Bunny buns

Happy Easter, to those of you celebrating! I noticed that in the last few days, this post on the bunny cookies I made for CNY was getting hits like crazy. I guess lots of people were looking for cookie ideas for Easter! Hey--if you are one of the people that pinned it on Pinterest or bookmarked it or found it on Google or Reddit--let me know, send me a picture of your cookies, please :) Anyway, I didn't get around to making cookies for Easter, but I did try to recreate their shape in bread rolls instead. Kinda cute, right? (I photoshopped the eyes in, as I was too lazy to melt chocolate for drawing them on in reality. Plus I really wanted to eat them right away.)

Anyhow, it's a short post kinda day--I've got some more coming this week, including a post about the bread that was turned into these bunny rolls. Keep an eye out, because that bread is so good I've made it twice in two weeks, and I suspect I will be making it again VERY SOON.

Spot Dessert Bar: An Exercise in Gluttony

Smoked coconut cheesecake
Smoked coconut cheesecake

I think I have to start this off with a story about my friend B, whose birthday was the cause for this giant sugar glut. B used to sit next to me at work, and I have no doubt I drove him insane for the year or two we sat together, with my constant muttering and cursing. Anyway, one year for his birthday, we decided to mess with his desk--and by mess with his desk, I mean we printed out about 100 pictures of David Hasselhoff and plastered his cubicle with them. Anyway, so I had missed his birthday proper as we were in HK, and we had this conversation when I came back:
Me: So, we should go celebrate your birthday!
B: Yeah, let's go eat dessert.
Me: Just dessert? I mean, we can go to dinner first and then have dessert? Or a drink and then dessert?
B: DESSERT.
Me: Are you sure? Not even a drink?
B: DESSERT.*

White Miso Semifreddo
White miso semifreddo

Dessert it was! Our original plan was to go to Chikalicious and then to Spot Dessert Bar for a bit of a dessert crawl, but Chikalicious wasn't open the day we were going. In hindsight, this turned out to be a good thing, because I am sure I would have died from sugar overload had we gone to both places! Spot is on St. Marks Pl, an area of the city that I no longer spend much time in, so at first I was just surprised to see all the changes (glad to see Trash and Vaudeville at least is still hanging on, though). Spot is a cute little place, but man, get there early. We did (while everyone was eating dinner, I bet) so didn't have a problem getting a table, but by the time we left there was a line.

Yuzu Eskimo
Yuzu Eskimo

You can probably tell just from glancing at these photos that we had...a LOT of desserts. There's an "omakase" option on their menu, which apparently is 9 desserts--they have 8 on their menu, so one of the desserts you get two of. We thought with 9 desserts that they would be tasting-size portions, but no! We got 9 full size desserts! Eep! We also foolishly ordered drinks, and before we knew it, the parade of sugary deliciousness started to arrive.

Green Tearamisu

The top photo, the smoked coconut cheesecake was one of my favorites. Above is the green tea tiramisu, which I was quite skeptical about, but turned out to be pretty tasty.

Thai Tea Creme Brulee
This was one of my favorites in terms of presentation! How cute is this? It's a little flask of Thai tea served with the creme brulee. The creme brulee was a little bit of a let down; too eggy.

DSC_0065
Another one of my favorites, although this doesn't seem to be on their website. I think it was a pumpkin spice cake of some kind, and my only regret was that at this point, I was way sugared out.

Chocolate Green Tea Lava
Sorry for the crap picture here; my hands were having the sugar shakes! We had two of these (B took the other one home, there was no way we were each eating an entire one.) Check out that green tea lava center! We were told that this is one of their most popular desserts, and I can see why.

DSC_0068
And finally, a deconstructed soft cheesecake. Then we walked about 40 blocks, which did precisely nothing to assuage my sugar guilt.

Happy birthday, man! This post is dedicated to you. Next year...I expect a giant party. I'll bring the novelty cake.
